Mr. John Sweetman
The Bags to Beds project has created its own little community at the UCC Upper School. Matthew and his team have effectively established an ongoing, inhouse service opportunity for students of all ages which has even led to informal leadership opportunities for particularly keen participants. The recent connection with Covenant House as an institutional partner is a natural collaboration that will likely ensure the legacy of this unique student initiative. Matthew's creativity and project management skills are inspiring - he has led by example with this project and is training up the next cohort of service-minded students to keep it alive in the years to come.

Bags to Beds isn’t just another ordinary service activity. It’s a unique learning experience combining the elements of leadership, community, and activity. To me, Bags to Beds is a symbol of hope for youth involvement in the real world. After joining Bags to Beds, one will soon realize that this is a project to stay in and contribute to, not a short, temporary service activity. Many of us that joined at the start of the year stayed for the entire year because we saw the value in what Bags to Beds does and the difference we could make. When youth take action, change follows.

The Bags to Beds Weave-a-thon was a great time. It brought together 2 key components of UCC’s identity (service and community) to help a better cause. I participated in the weave-a-thon and I had a blast. It was competitive and I noticed a lot of people I competed with and against coming back in the future for further Bags to Beds events. The event truly reflects the goals of UCC and Bags to Beds.

Bags to Beds is a great way for students to earn service hours, and it’s a meaningful initiative to be a part of. As a newer member of the community, it was hard to find a service-based group to join, and Bags to Beds was very popular amongst all year levels. I look forward to continuing my work in this initiative.

Bags to Beds demonstrates how everyday items that are discarded can be recycled and repurposed for those in need. The weaveathon fostered a sense of community among UCC members and raised awareness of our fortunate circumstances while simultaneously encouraging friendly competition.

Since joining Bags to Beds, I have found a community of like-minded students who are driven to leave a positive impact on the local community.

Participating in the Bags to Beds Weave-a-thon was a truly unique experience, allowing me to channel my competitiveness into a contest that directly benefitted those in need. By knowing each weave made a tangible difference, I was driven to do even more, racing against rivals to maximize my impact. Even without winning, I realized that the competition's structure meant my efforts pushed others to do more, amplifying the overall impact and underscoring the value of this collaborative endeavour.
